JSC „Klaipėdos kartonas“ regrets about inconvenience, which was caused by the water line on Minijos street in the beginning of October for the citizens. The spreading hum was an incident which happened during the planned repair.
No harm to people’s health was caused.
In the beginning of October a planned work in a water line was performed there. The preparation for the work lasted for 3 months. Special neutralizing preparations were filled in sewage system during the whole period of preparation; however, it did not help to fully prevent gas leakage into the environment.  
This event was promptly recorded by the specialists of the Klaipėda city Health Centre (KCHC) and Klaipėda’s regional environmental protection department (KREPD). It was identified by the carried investigations, that hydrogen sulphide gas leakage rate did not exceed the allowable limits, there was no harm made to the human health and nature.
Such a big sewer repair was made for the first time during the last 20 years, it is expected, that over the next decade it won’t be required to carry out such work. At the same time, the access of hum will be prevented.
Mayor of Klaipėda city, Rimantas Taraškevičius expressed his interest in that situation. On October 12, the Heads of the “Klaipėdos kartonas” conversation was held by the mayor’s initiative. In the presence of the Heads of KCHC and KREPD, municipality specialists, the situation was introduced to everybody.  
It was agreed that “Klaipėdos kartonas” will promptly inform the responsible side, institutions, and residents about repair works and possible consequences. The Heads of the company have also encouraged the citizens to care more actively about the activity of “Klaipėdos kartonas” and promised to organize cognitive excursions around the company. Such excursions have been constantly organized for the city pupils for a number of years.
Millions are paid for the ecology
The Heads and the owners of the “Klaipėdos kartonas” struggle in minimizing the company’s effect to the environment, and the people’s quality of life.  The company invests in the environmental projects from 0,7 up to 1,5 million Lt every year. ISO 14000, the system of the environmental control is strictly operated in the company. This year the system was recognized as a winner in the traditional competition of the Ministry of Environment and Confederation of the Industrialists “Environmental Achievements”.
“My family and me have been living just a few hundred meters from the company for many years and it causes no harm to our health”, – says the general director of “Klaipėdos kartonas”, Arūnas Pasvenskas.
According to him, “Helcom“, the Commission of Helsinki, which included “Klaipėdos kartonas” to the list of the environment polluting objects in 1992, exluded it from the list in 2006 after the evaluation of the carried work in the company.
“Klaipėdos kartonas” with the help of its specialists prepares the “Report of the effectiveness of protection” which is submitted to all the responsible city institutions. Everybody who wishes to be informed about this report can do this on the website www.kartonas.lt.
The company also takes part in the initiative “Global compact”, published by the United Nations. It has organic production asone of the most important priorities. “Klaipėdos kartonas” is the largest paper package processor in the Baltic States. Over the year, new production turns into waste-paper of even 110 million kilograms. According to the scholars’ estimating the company over the year, processing such amount of paper packages, and comparing to the production of the cardboard from wood, saves about 1,7 million trees, 3,5 million cubic meters of water and 55 million kilograms of oil.
Paper consumption in our region is growing constantly; the demand for its processing is growing inevitably too. European Union especially supports the projects and companies, whose activity is directed to the utilization of the secondary raw material and the conservation of the natural resources.
“Klaipėdos kartonas” supports and will support good environmental initiatives of other organizations. For example, this year it was one of the main sponsors of a large international eco-school festival “Baltic week 2007” held in Klaipėda.
